CHECKLIST May 2026 · 7 min read
⚡ TL;DR
  • Documents come in 3 phases: Application → Invitation Letter → Visa
  • Start collecting documents in April–May for September intake
  • Apostille takes 2–4 weeks — do this early
  • HIV test must be done within 3 months of travel date
  • Keep 10 passport-size photos handy — every form asks for them
⚠️ Important: Document requirements can vary slightly between universities. Always confirm the exact list with your chosen university after receiving their offer letter. This checklist covers the standard documents required across all major NMC-approved Russian medical universities for Indian students.

Phase 1 — Application Documents

These are submitted to the university at the time of application. Collect these first as they determine whether you get an offer.

📋 Academic Documents PHASE 1

Class 10 Marksheet & Certificate (original + 2 attested copies)
Attested by a Gazetted Officer or Notary Public. Board-issued originals required.
Class 12 Marksheet & Certificate (original + 2 attested copies)
Must show PCB subjects. Minimum 50% in Physics, Chemistry & Biology required by NMC. Provisionals accepted initially.
NEET Scorecard (original + 2 copies)
Mandatory for Indian students. Current year scorecard preferred. Some universities accept 2–3 year old scores — confirm with the university.
Transfer Certificate (TC) from school
From your Class 12 school. Original required. If misplaced, contact your school for a duplicate.
Migration Certificate
Issued by your Class 12 board (CBSE/State Board). Apply for this as early as possible — can take 4–6 weeks.

🪪 Identity Documents PHASE 1

Valid Passport (original + 4 copies)
Must have at least 18 months validity remaining from date of travel. If passport is expiring, renew it first — everything else waits on this.
Birth Certificate (original + 2 attested copies)
Municipal birth certificate. If unavailable, a school leaving certificate with date of birth works as substitute at most universities.
Passport-size Photographs (minimum 10)
White background, recent (within 3 months). Get 20 copies — you will use them everywhere.

Phase 2 — After Offer Letter (Apostille & Attestation)

Once the university issues an offer letter or invitation letter, these documents need apostille — a government authentication stamp that makes Indian documents valid in Russia.

🔏 Documents Requiring Apostille PHASE 2

Class 10 Certificate — Apostilled
Process: State Education Department → State Home Department → MEA (Ministry of External Affairs), New Delhi. Takes 2–4 weeks. Alternatively, use an authorised apostille agency (₹1,500–3,000 per document).
Class 12 Certificate — Apostilled
Same process as above. Start apostille for both 10th and 12th simultaneously to save time.
Birth Certificate — Apostilled
Municipal birth certificate apostilled via State Home Department → MEA.
University Invitation Letter (original)
Issued by the Russian university. This is the key document for the visa application. Do not lose it.

Phase 3 — Visa Application Documents

After receiving the official invitation letter from the university, you apply for the Russian student visa (Category D) at the nearest Russian consulate or visa application centre.

✈️ Russia Student Visa Documents PHASE 3

Original Passport (valid 18+ months)
Submitted to the consulate with your visa application. You will not have it for 2–4 weeks during processing.
Visa Application Form (filled online)
Complete at visa.kdmid.ru. Print the completed form. Fees: around ₹5,000–7,000.
Official University Invitation Letter (original)
Must be the original letter from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs or the university itself. Photocopies not accepted.
HIV Test Certificate
From a government-recognised hospital or approved lab. Must be dated within 3 months of your travel date — do not do this too early.
Medical Fitness Certificate
From a registered medical practitioner certifying you are physically fit to study. Standard format accepted by most universities.
Travel Insurance (optional but recommended)
Some universities arrange this. If not, purchase travel insurance covering the journey. Medical insurance inside Russia is arranged by the university upon arrival.
Passport-size Photographs (2 for visa form)
White background, recent.

Timeline — Start to Departure

April–May: Apply to university, collect academic documents

Submit application with 10th, 12th marksheets, NEET scorecard, passport copies. Also apply for Migration Certificate from your board — this takes longest.

Send 10th and 12th certificates for apostille simultaneously. Use a reputable apostille agency to save time. Budget ₹5,000–8,000 total.

University issues the official invitation letter from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. This triggers the visa process.
